So, what am I doing in this course?

I've only started teaching two and a half years ago. The use of technology used to be an added tool a.k.a 'candy' to make lessons interesting and the Internet was an additional resource for learning. The interactive whiteboard was a 'wow' then. Within a short span of time, things have changed rather drastically. Maybe not. Maybe they've always been evolving and evolving fast. It's just that schools never really caught up with the speed.

Using the Internet or some form of technology is now part of every lesson. Incorporating audio, video and other visuals are expected (so my students tell me). My students no longer look at me when I talk. They're googling, msn-ing, reading resources from Blackboard all at the same time. Trust me. I've tested students over time and they were 'listening' to me, somehow. So now, I feel alot better knowing that although they might not look at me, they're at least following the lesson.

How times have changed. Just a couple of weeks ago, I was teaching the graduating students how to prepare their job application letters and resumes. After reading this news article, I wonder how much longer is the syllabus I'm teaching relevant. To apply for this job, the ideal applicant should have the skills of a writer, blogger, photographer and video-grapher.

So, what am I doing in this Digital Literacy course? Who knows? Maybe I could just use the skills to apply for the dream island job afterall!
