What is 21st Century Literacy?

Of late, I've been quite troubled by the 'future' of literacy. What's going to happen to our future generation in terms of their education? I've been advocating the importance of reading and writing (the print-based way). But is this the path my learners and I should take?

A chat with my good friend, Denise, brought me to this document -
www.adobe.com/education/pdf/globalimperative.pdf. As I read the doc, what struck me most was:

"21st century literacy is the set of abilities and skills where aural, visual and digital literacy overlap. These include the ability to understand the power of images and sounds, to recognize and use that power, to manipulate and transform digital media, to distribute them pervasively, and to easily adapt them to new forms."
(Global Imperative)

I'm excited about my job as an educator, and the direction that's ahead of me. I don't have all the answers yet and I probably won't. The good thing is, I've communities of learners and other educators to learn from, work with and contribute to.
